For 10 years, the "Pouilly-Fuissé" PDO's Defence and Management Organisation (ODG) and the INAO have been working on the recognition of these first growths of the appellation by studying in particular the reputation, uses and natural characteristics of the plots. This work has made it possible to offer 22 "premier cru" climates, representing 194 hectares (24% of the "Pouilly-Fuissé" PDO area), spread over the four communes of the appellation: Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly and Vergisson.
Unlike the other communal PDOs of Burgundy, the communal appellations of Mâconnais did not until now benefit from climates in “premier cru. ” The OGD of the PDO “Pouilly-Fuissé” was the first to seek recognition of the specificities of certain places, called “climates” according to Burgundian terminology. He filed an application for recognition as a “première crus” in 2010. The PDO “Pouilly-Fuissé” is located in the Saône and Loire, in the extreme south of the region Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It is one of the five “communal” appellations of the Mâconnais. The PDO “Pouilly-Fuissé” concerns only white wines, produced within a delimited area of production of about 800 hectares spread over 4 communes.
This recognition is a pledge of the future for the economic development of the region. Figures for the PDO “Pouilly-Fuissé” (2020):
- 350 operators
- 40 000 hectolitres produced
- 3 hectares: average area of holdings
